Confused on unleash and non-unleashed counters

Let's say i play Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch after using Savage Summoning to give it flash, and drop it down onto the field after my opponent has declared Loxodon Smiter as an attacker.

I choose not to unleash it, exava is a 3/3 first strike with a +1/+1 counter on it.

But can it block?

I'm pretty sure Unleash works if the creature has a +1/+1 counter, even if its not put on with the Unleash ability, like with Increasing Savagery . So no, I don't think it can block.

Probably should have checked gatherer first....

4/15/2013 A creature with unleash cant block if it has any +1/+1 counter on it, not just one put on it by the unleash ability.

Yeah, can't block, thanks ghost. Best make sure i never make that mistake during an actual game!
