Conflicting abilities
Asked by Exodus20317 8 years ago
So let's say I have a Seraph of the Masses that's currently a 10/10 because I control nine other creatures. My opponent enchants it with Reduce in Stature, making it have base power and toughness 0/2. But at the same time, Seraph of the Masses still has its ability that makes its power and toughness equal to the number of creatures I control.
The question is, which ability ultimately has its effect? The enchantment's ability or the Seraph's?

Dang, I kinda feel like a jerk now. We had quite an argument over that. I figured that since Reduce in Stature changes its base values, Seraph's ability would just change it from 0/2 to 10/10 rather than from / like it usually is.
Thanks for the help though. Any chance you have a link to somewhere I can find those rules in case something like this happens again?

Your creature will be 0/2.
Whenever multiple continuous effects would apply to an object, you apply them according to the layer system. Power and toughness are handled in Layer 7.
P/T characteristic-defining abilities are applied in layer 7a, and then P/T-setting effects are applied in layer 7b. The result is that setting effects overwrite CDAs.
