Commander movement

Asked by FatFreddiesCat 2 years ago

If my Commander (whoever it is) is in my graveyard and an opponent tries to remove my graveyard with Ashiok, Dream Render, can I move my Commander to the Commander Zone?

The short version is yes, you can.

Rule 903.9a 'If a commander is in a graveyard or in exile and that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its owner may put it into the command zone. This is a state-based action. See rule 704.'

This is to say, the commander card goes into exile, and then from exile is put into the command zone.

Rule 903.9b 'If a commander would be put into its owner’s hand or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.'

If a commander card would go to hand or library you may instead put it into the commandzone as a replacement effect. In this case is does not go to the original zone at all.
