Combat Damage then negative counters
Asked by tehhoff 9 years ago
I have looked on tapped out and on google and was not able to find an answer. If I attack with a 2/2 creature, and my opponent declares his Sylvan Caryatid as a blocker. Damage resolves. On 2nd main phase I cast Doomwake Giant the question is does the Sylvan Caryatid die and go into the GY?
I was told by a judge this would not be the case on an indestructible creature. If something was indestructible and received the same scenario they would not go into the GY, so I wanted to check to make sure this was the ruling on a non-indestructible or if it was different.

Indestructible is different. In order to kill an indestructible creature with a -X/-X effect, you need to reduce its toughness to 0 or less. In this case, if Sylvan Caryatid were indestructible, it would not die. It would be a -1/2 with lethal damage marked on it, but indestructible prevents it from being destroyed by that damage.
Also, note that damage doesn't resolve because it doesn't use the stack. Damage is simply dealt.

Awesome, thank you guys. I never really ask questions since I can find the answer myself, however this one was difficult to find. I am shocked on how fast the tappedout community responds. Hard to find a nice community now a days.

Yes.
Your 2/2 creature will deal 2 damage to Sylvan Caryatid, which will mark two damage on it. Once Doomwake Giant's ETB trigger resolves, Sylvan Caryatid will have two toughness and two damage marked on it. Thus, it will be sent to the graveyard as a state-based action since it has damage marked on it greater than or equal to its toughness.
