Casting with Lion's Eye Diamond

Asked by snotskie 12 years ago

Can I cast a spell from my hand with card:Lion's Eye Diamond?

CR 601.2 seems to say that you (1) move a card from some zone, like the hand, to the stack, (2) declare any choices, as these may determine the cmc, and (3) pay for it.

601.2f "If the total cost includes a mana payment, the player then has a chance to activate mana abilities"

No you cant because discarding your hand is part of the cost of activating card:Lion's Eye Diamond. You can however cast a spell with Hellbent, crack lions eye diamond, then the hellbent will be available.

Just to clarify your citing of 601.2: You do all 3 things at the same time, putting the card on the stack, paying costs, and choosing targets. If you can't do all of them, the spell is illegal, and can't be played.

@Greatsword , How can they all be done at the same time? 601.2 "Casting a spell follows the steps listed below, in order."

This section of the CR really needs to be clearer if it's not the way it seems.

While its true there is an "order" they do virtually happen in the same step. Once all of the other steps are complete, and mana is payed, then the spell can resolve. However in this situation, the card wont be in your hand before the mana is available to cast it.

They're all done at the same time, in that they must all be met before the game continues. If you don't, or can't, the game reverts to the moment before you cast it.

Again, from 601.2:

"....If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that spell started to be cast (see rule 717, Handling Illegal Actions). Announcements and payments cant be altered after theyve been made."

So, where the CR says the steps are followed in order, it really means they are declared in order, then all done at once?

From card:Lion's Eye Diamond gatherer: "The ability is a mana ability, so it is activated and resolves as a mana ability, but it can only be activated at times when you can cast an Instant. Yes, this is a bit weird." Since this mana ability acts as a spell, you don't have priority during the casting process to activate the ability as a normal mana ability.

Or, could it also be saying that you fail to cast the spell if there exists an order for those steps such that you would be unable to comply with some step?

The steps don't get performed "at the same time", because the rules specifically say they're done in a particular order. If during one of those steps you find it's impossible to complete it in the proper way, you have to back up to before you started casting the spell.

602.2: 601.2. To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell follows the steps listed below, in order. If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that spell started to be cast (see rule 717, Handling Illegal Actions). Announcements and payments cant be altered after theyve been made.
