Can you use Altered Ego's ability whenever it would ETB?

I'm brewing a flicker enter the battlefield deck and am running Eldrazi Displacer as well as Altered Ego. If I resolve Eldrazi Displacer's ability targeting Altered Ego, can I choose a new creature to copy with Altered Ego? I'm aware it will lose the +1/+1 counters.

Yes, you can choose a new creature (and you have to, too, you can't have it stay a copy of the first thing you copied if the first thing is no longer on the battlefield).
EDIT: well, you could have it enter as itself, but then it would just die unless you have an anthem or something.
