can you play Stun after blockers are declared?

Asked by ilikeoldcardsbetter 13 years ago

i.e. , can you target a creature who has been declared as a blocker?

I don't have a specific ruling but you can cast it. The "Target creature can't block this turn" will not apply unless there are multiple combat steps that turn. Since the creature is already blocking Stun cannot stop the current blocking. Stun essentially says: If the creature would be able block later this turn, it can't. You can still cast Stun , you would draw a card and the creature wouldn't be able to block for the rest of the turn.

Oracle Rulings:

  • 10/4/2004: Must be used before blockers are declared in order to affect blocking decisions. You can't wait to see what your opponent declares and then try to stop them.
  • 10/4/2004: You can use it after combat or even on a creature which can't possibly block this turn because it's that player's turn to attack, but it generally has no effect other than to let you draw a card.
It's essentially the same reason you can't use Tumble Magnet on an attacking creature to stop it from attacking that turn. Once a creature is declared as an attacker or defender, cards like Stun cannot change that status. The only way to reverse the declaration is to play a spell that says something along the lines of "untap target creature and remove it from combat", a 'la Disharmony .

the player needs to declar his attack phase and give you time to use stuff like tumble magnet, same idea as waiting till the end of his turn to activate Wellwisher or somthing

most players dont bother giving you time to do stuff like that so you have to interupt them when there chusing there attackers

Epo is technically correct about the tumble magnet thing, however, a player is supposed to declare their phase changes, ie from main to combat, combat to main, main to end of turn phase, making it possible to use Tumble Magnet or Stun just before the attack/block is declared.
