can you play dramatic rescue before a creature goes to the grave yard?

Cards like Dramatic Rescue seem a little mins worded in my mind. If I attack with a creature and a blocker is chosen I can used dramatic rescue to return the blocking creature to it owners hand all fair enough, but could I not return my attacking creature to my hand? Avoiding any combat damage happening or can I even cast it after combat damage befor the creature get to the graveyard?
Once a creature is dealt damage, state based effects are checked and your creature would die. You can't put something on the stack between these effects.
Essentially, there is no way to save it post damage.

Thought as much. Refining a detain deck and seeing uses for this in many ways. Thinking you can double cast a creature, save a creature from death, stop opposing creatures... And more

You can't "double cast" a creature with it, you can only target creature permanents with Dramatic Rescue, not creature spells.

So I can't cast a creature, obviously it has summon sick ness. Then once it's resolved onto the field cast dramatic rescue and then cast the creature again?

Once it resolves and is on the battelfield, yes you can because then it's a permanent. But "double casting" wasn't exactly a clear term in that regard.

Yes, you may cast it after blockers have been declared, BEFORE damage is dealt. This is the last time any player receives priority before damage is dealt. Damage does not use the stack, and therefore, after damage is dealt and State-Based Actions are checked, it will see lethal damage marked on the attacking creature and it will be sent to the graveyard (this does not use the stack either). Therefore, you couldn't cast Dramatic Rescue after damage to save the creature.
