For instance can Ajani Goldmane & Ajani, Mentor of Heroes be on the battlefield simultaneously?

No. There's a "planeswalker uniqueness rule" (which is roughly analogous to the legend rule) that states that if you control two or more planeswalkers with the same planeswalker subtype (e.g., Ajani, Nissa, Jace), then you choose one and put the rest into their owner's graveyard.
