Can you draw on a card, and still play it legally?

Asked by TheBlackRune 7 years ago

If I wanted to alter the graphic area of a card, like say Cover of Darkness and make the man on the card look like a zombie instead of a human, could I do that and still play the card in tournaments legally?

Yes. As long as it doesn't make it look like another card or is deceptive, doesn't cover the text, name, or mana cost of the card. According to the rules, you are permitted to use altered arts that comply with these rules, but the head judge always has the last say in the matter.

That's really good to know. I am going to draw up a storm, thank you.

You also have to make sure that whatever you use to alter the card doesn't make it "marked". That is, it has to be indistinguishable from other cards in the deck when everything is shuffled together. Certain paints can add too much thickness to a card if they're applied heavily, and some pens will make impressions that can be seen through the back of a card if it isn't kept in a sleeve.
