Can "Shrine" be chosen as a creature type?

Asked by carpecanum 9 years ago

Things w/ Changeling (like Taurean Mauler) or cards like Riptide Replicator can choose or be any creature type. Do you need to choose a type that actually exists as a creature in game already? (Shrine, of course, is an enchantment type...Honden of Infinite Rage etc).

If "Elf" or "Goblin" can be a sorcery or instant I thought "Shrine" could be a creature.

205.3e. If an effect instructs a player to choose a subtype, that player must choose one, and only one, existing subtype, and the subtype he or she chooses must be for the appropriate card type. For example, the player can't choose a land type if an instruction requires choosing a creature type.

Since Shrine is an enchantment type, and not a creature type, you cannot choose it for Riptide Replicator, and Changelings are not Shrines.

As further clarification, the "Elf" subtype on some instants and sorceries is a creature type, but this is not because Instants and Creatures share the same list of available subtypes; Tribals and Creatures do, and all "Elf instants" and such also have the Tribal type. The lists of subtypes do not overlap except for Creatures and Tribals sharing the same list of creature types, and Instants and Sorceries sharing the same list of spell types.

Thank you very much. That would have been fun but broken as hell. The "existing" subtype rule is very clear.
