Can I to the slaughter to kill Gideon in response to his 0 ability?

Let's say my opponent taps out on an empty board and plays Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and uses the ability to put an ally out. Can I in response cast To the Slaughter to make him sac the Gideon. Him keeping the ally of course.

I'm sure the answer is yes, but I wanted to know before making myself look like an idiot
