Can I choose to wipe the board with Child of Alara
Asked by Lloyd156_BLUE 10 years ago
Child of Alara is my commander. If he dies can I choose to put him in my command zone. If I do does he still wipe the board or is the command zone a replacement effect meaning he never actually goes to the graveyard?

Putting a commander into the command zone instead of exile or the graveyard is a replacement effect (note the use of the word "instead"). If you put Child of Alara into the command zone, its on-death ability will never trigger because Child of Alara never died.

"If a Commander would be put into a graveyard or exile from anywhere, its owner may choose to move it to the command zone instead. Details
This is a replacement effect; the creature never goes to the graveyard and will not trigger such abilities.Commanders will move to the library or hand as normal; only transitions to Exile or the Graveyard may be replaced."
It's a replacement effect, so he never hits the graveyard, so yes you can 'choose' when the board wipe happens or not.
