Can I cast a creature with Flash during the combat phase, and block with it?

Scenario: My opponent declares that they are attacking with a Benalish Veteran . Can I cast an Ambush Viper in response, and then block with it?

Cool, thanks! :)
That's what I thought, but I swear that it wouldn't allow me to do that in Magic Online, so I thought that I might be wrong. I must have been passing up the opportunity without knowing it.

You have to make sure you do it BEFORE letting the declare blockers step pass. If you either say no blocks or in the case of an online game, let the timer run out for the blocker step then you can no longer do it.

The key is to cast it during the correct step. The very first action of the declare blockers step is to actually declare the blockers, and it's a turn based action that doesn't use the stack. In order to be able to block with a creature, you have to get it onto the battlefield during the declare attackers step at the latest, so that it will be available when the declare blockers step begins.
