can Festering Newt kill a 2/2 creature?

base on Festering Newt ability that give a -1/-1 when it dies,so when it blocks a 2/2 creature will it be able to kill it? or does the ability have tobe assigned to another creature?

It can kill it.
The newt will mark 1 damage on the Grizzly Bears . Then it's triggered ability will resolve on the bears, making its toughness 1. It'll then die as a state-based action for having damage marked on it equal to its toughness.
