Can Beguiler of Wills use its tap abitility on my turn?

Asked by Zewl 12 years ago

When i am about to use Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord Sacrafice ability to deal direct damage, Opponent taps his beguiler of wills, to take control of Jarad.

Imm wondering is there anything illegal about that move, can that be done or does it technically have Summoning Sickness.

Yes, Beguiler of Wills can be activated on your turn as long as summoning sickness has expired on it. If your opponenet has not controlled it since the beginning of his/her last upkeep than it still has summoning sickness and cannot be used.

But it is still doesn't work in your opponents favor. Since you have priority to cast spells and activate abilities on your turn you will be able to activate Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and place his ability on the stack before your opponent can take Jarad from you. Once the ability is on the stack it resolves independently of the source.

In conclusion, you he can take it on your turn but not before you can activate the ability and make your opponent lose life. Also, as a side note Jarad does not deal damage it causes loss of life. Most of the time the distinction is not important but there is an important difference between the two.

Unless Beguiler of Wills had sumoning sickness, so it could not tap, it can take control of Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord even on your turn, assuming it's controler have 3 creatures on the battlefield.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord Beguiler of Wills

Your opponent can activate an ability when he gains priority. You asked if the beguiler had summoning sickness, it depends. Was it cast the turn prior to yours? Then it does have summoning sickness (unless given haste somehow) and your opponent can't use it's ability.

The beguiler must be under your opponent's control since the beggining of his most recent turn to lose summoning sickness.

You sacrificing a creature is the cost of Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord 's ability, that means that if you say something like "I activate the ability" or "I sacrifice a creature" the ability is already in the stack, then your opponent taps Beguiler of Wills and it's ability goes on the stack.

Beguiler of Wills resolves first, your opponent gains control of Jarad, then damage is dealt to both of you.

Another good point is that since sacrificing the creature is part of the cost it will already be in the graveyard buffing Jarad when your opponent tries to use the Beguiler on him. Which could be relevant since it will boost Jarad's power as long as the sacrificed creature is not a token creature.

The rule is this one:

302.6. A creatures activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost cant be activated unless the creature has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature cant attack unless it has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the summoning sickness rule.

Kbra is correct except for that last part. First, it is loss of life not damage as I mentioned before. Second, you will not lose life just because your opponent stole Jarad, only he will lose life because you still control the ability which is now independent of its source.

Yup, Kirtanian is right, I read "each opponent" and thought it was " each Player", my bad.
