Can Arcbound Ravager sacrifice himself to his own ability?

Asked by TheGodofNight 9 years ago

A friend and I were playing some kitchen table Magic and we got into this debate about whether or not Arcbound Ravager could sacrifice himself to his own ability. Furthermore, if he can, he is no longer a valid target for the second part of that ability correct? Thanks in advance for helping to settle this discussion for us!

Is Arcbound Ravager an artifact? then yes, you can sacrifice him to himself. And then yes, since he'll be in the graveyard you can't use the Modular trigger on himself.

Arcbound Ravager's first ability's activation cost is "Sacrifice an artifact." Since it doesn't specify "another artifact," you're free to sacrifice Arcbound Ravager itself.

Note, however, that you won't get a +1/+1 counter from that instance of the ability because Arcbound Ravager won't be on the field anymore. You'll get a modular trigger to move only the +1/+1 counters that were on Arcbound Ravager at the time you sacrificed it.
