Bosh, Iron Golem as a Commander

Asked by themlsna 12 years ago

Bosh, Iron Golem is a legendary artifact creature, but has R in it's rules text, is it an illegal choice for a commander? Does it still have a colorless color identity, but leave you unable to activate its own ability, or does it have a red color identity?

I'm not interested in constructing a deck for him, was just curious about the ruling. Thanks in advance.

Color identity used to just be based on mana cost, making Bosh ineligible as a commander, but the rules for that have been changed. The color identity of a card is now based on all mana symbols printed on the card, color indicator symbols (the dot on the back face of a double-faced card), and color words in characteristic-setting abilities (most of these have been replaced with color indicators in Oracle text). Bosh's color identity is Red, so if he were the commander you would be building a mono-Red deck.
