Bloodbond March with Persist

Asked by BigPimpn70 13 years ago

When a persist creature dies with bloodbond march on the field, do all copies return to play? And does this allow the player to use "priority" to sac one infinitely (to nantuko husk or other)?

No. Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March only triggers when a creature spell is cast. Persist is an ability that returns a creature card from the graveyard to the battlefield. You don't cast that card.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your second question.

I think he means "if this works the way I think it does, can I sacrifice the 'undied' creature with Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March's ability still on the stack, so that it will come back again when that ability resolves?" If it worked that way, the answer would be yes, but as Epochalyptik says, it doesn't.

It specifically says "played" and not "cast". My buddy was playing a persist deck while I had a Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March on the field. I didn't think it would work the way he wanted it to, but couldn't prove it on the fly from my kitchen table. His argument was pretty sound and i just had to eat the loss. Aren't persist cards "played" when they die without a -1/-1 counter on them? Won't a Kitchen FinksMTG Card: Kitchen Finks return to the battlefield from the graveyard via Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March if another dies without the counters. Sorry for being a bit long-winded, but I want to make it clear for him/us so he doesn't buy a set of those and make his already painful deck "broken." Thanx guys

"Played" is the old way of saying "cast." You return the persist card to play, but you don't play the persist card (if that makes sense).

The reason the "in play" zone was renamed "the battlefield" and the verb "play" was revised to "cast" was because of the overloading of the word "play" and the confusion it caused, like the confusion you and your buddy have over how Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March works. If you use Gatherer to check on the current Oracle text of the cards involved, you'll see Bloodbond MarchMTG Card: Bloodbond March's text has been edited to read "Whenever a player casts a creature spell...", and the rules text and reminder text for persist has been edited to read "...return it to the battlefield..."

In fact, if the most recent printing of a card is more than a couple years old and a question you have about it depends on the particular wording of the rules text, the first step should be to look it up on Gatherer and check for any clarifying text edits or rules notes.
