Bands with other Legends cannot band with Legends?

Asked by UniqueUserID 10 years ago

So turns out these bizarre lands once existed, they are Seafarer's Quay, Cathedral of Serra, Adventurers' Guildhouse, Unholy Citadel and Mountain Stronghold.

I'm not sure I understand how they work. I read an old magic article which said "A creature with bands with other Legends CANT BAND WITH A LEGEND.". Is this true or just outdated?

Got some follow up questions too if they do band if you would be so kind. Always know it's gonna get interesting when banding is involved!

Sometime in the thirteen years since that article was written, bands with other was given an overhaul. Here's the current rules for forming a band when attacking:

702.21c. As a player declares attackers, he or she may declare that one or more attacking creatures with banding and up to one attacking creature without banding (even if it has "bands with other") are all in a "band." He or she may also declare that one or more attacking [quality] creatures with "bands with other [quality]" and any number of other attacking [quality] creatures are all in a band. A player may declare as many attacking bands as he or she wants, but each creature may be a member of only one of them. (Defending players can't declare bands but may use banding in a different way; see rule 702.21j.)

So, a legendary creature with "Bands with other legendary creatures" can band with any number of other legendary creatures, regardless of whether or not they also have banding or "bands with other legendary creatures". However, you do not get to include one additional creature in such a band, like you would be able to with regular banding.

When blocking, if there is a blocker with "Bands with other legendary creatures" and another legendary creature blocking the same creatures, the blockers are considered to form a band.

Oooooooo!

In that case, if I have 5 legends on the field each of a different mono-colour and Mountain Stronghold on the field, does this mean each one can band with all/other legends even if they don't share colours?

Surely they can only band with the red Legend and then after each other can band in this band? Or can the remainders simply form their own band?

In your question about the 5 legendary creatures and Mountain Stronghold, the Red legendary creature is the only one with a "bands with other legendary creatures" ability. Any band you form has to have the Red one in it.

So basically all/any OTHER Legendary can band with the Legend that matches the Band Land's requirement?

Yes, that's what the rule given by Drilnoth says.

He or she may also declare that one or more attacking [quality] creatures with "bands with other [quality]" and any number of other attacking [quality] creatures are all in a band.

In this example, "[quality]" is "Legendary Creature". You have one creature with "bands with other Legendary Creatures", so you can put any number of Legendary Creatures in a band with it.
