As you cast the spell, you may choose any value for X.
- If you choose X = 1, than the spell cost 3 colorless mana, and it enters the battlefield with 1 charge counter on it.
- If you choose X = 2, than the spell cost 6 colorless mana, and it enters the battlefield with 2 charge counters on it.

When X appears on a card, all values of X have to be the same. You cast Astral Cornucopia and decide what X is, then you pay 3 times that amount. For example:
X = 0 ... The spell costs 0
X = 1 ... The spell costs 3
X = 2 ... The spell costs 6
And so on
