Artisan of Forms Clarification.

Asked by brcap 9 years ago

Could someone please confirm the following for me?

Q1: Artisan of Forms is currently a copy of Agent of the Fates (or any creature with heroic). I then cast a spell that targets it. The object (Artisan/Agents) now has two instances of heroic. I can chose the order they trigger, and am free to trigger Agent's heroic, and then trigger Artisan's heroic to have it become a copy of another card. (or i do technically have to do that in the opposite order because of how they would resolve on the stack?)

Q2: I target Artisan of Forms (currently a copying nothing) with a spell, the heroic triggers and I make Artisan of Forms a copy of Agent of the Fates .

According to the ruling on Heroic: "Heroic abilities will resolve before the spell that caused them to trigger"

But, Agent's Heroic (now present on the object) will not trigger from the same spell that made Artisan into a copy of Agent's because the Heroic triggers on casting.

Is this right? Thanks for your help.

Q1: Right, both Heroic abilities trigger when you cast the spell. Since they would go onto the stack at the same time and you control both of them, you get to decide the order for putting them onto the stack. Note that you have to choose the target for the copy ability at the time it goes onto the stack, so if you want to copy an opponent's creature you should put the copy effect on top of the stack (your opponent could choose to sacrifice it first if the abilities were ordered the other way).

Q2: Right, in this example the Artisan didn't have the new Heroic ability at the time the spell was cast, so that ability doesn't trigger.

  • in the first scenario, Yes, you are able to put the 2 heroic triggers on the stack in whatever order you choose. Take note that by the time either of them would start resolving, they would both already be on the stack, so the order of the triggers won't affect how many you get.

  • in the second scenario, you cannot get an Agent of the Fates trigger. Triggered abilities are put onto the stack when a player would receive priority, and you receive priority at least once between when you targeted the Artisan and when it's triggered ability would resolve. At this time Artisan of forms is still not an copy of Agent, but your opportunity to trigger heroic is already in the past.

Thank you both. And for the tip on ordering.
