Affinity for Artifacts
Asked by VynnRook 10 years ago
I don't know if the rules about Affinity have changed, but from what I understood if you had affinity for artifacts, and you had enough artifacts in play to reduce the cost of the artifact to zero you always had to pay 1 mana to put the card into play. Does Affinity make cards "free" to play ever?
One hook is that affinity only reduces colorless costs, so if you play a colored affinity card such as Thoughtcast , then you'd still have to pay the blue mana no matter what.

Yes, here's the exact rule for Affinity:
*702.40a Affinity is a static ability that functions while the spell is on the stack. Affinity for [text] means This spell costs you 1 less to cast for each [text] you control.
As this only affects colorless mana, it is pretty useful for artifacts for the reason you cite: it can make an artifact spell cost 0 mana.

You understood wrong. There was never a time where you would have to pay 1 for a card that affinity would reduce the cost of to 0.
Yes, affinity can make cards free to play if you have enough artifacts(or whatever you have affinity for).
