A creature theft card/ Yahenni, undying partisan question
Asked by Under_torment 7 years ago
alright, this may be a moderately dumb question, but i just want to check with other people before i try it.
If i use something like Kari Zev's Expertise or hijack to steal, lets say, their verdurous Gearhulk, after using it to attack them, and then sacrificing it to Yahenni, would he gain a +1/+1 counter since it technically belongs to them? or, since it was under my control when i sacrificed it, it would just give him indestructible and nothing else?

Please link all cards in your question by enclosing them in double square brackets ('[' and ']' are square brackets).
There's a distinction to be made here: ownership vs. control.
Yahenni's first ability can be reworded as: Whenever a creature dies, if it was controlled by an opponent when it died, put a +1/+1 counter on Yahenni.
That being said, since an opponent did not control the creature when you sacrificed it (regardless of who owned the card), Yahenni will not get the +1/+1 counter. On the other hand, you can still sacrifice the creature owned by your opponent because, again, only control matters when choosing what to sacrifice.

Plese link your cards, so that we know what yo're talking about.
Yahenni, Undying Partisan, not going to link the others because they're not important here.
If you gain control of an opponent's creature, you are now its controller. Your opponent doesn't control it anymore.
If you sacrifice that creature to pay for Yahenni's acivated ability, the triggered ability won't trigger, because no creature died under an opponent's control. Yahenni won't get the counter, but will gain indestructible.
