1 creature, multiple Demonic Rising's

Asked by MrGrizz1y 13 years ago

If 1 creature is on the battlefield and 4 Demonic RisingMTG Card: Demonic Rising enchantments are on the battlefield, will the Demonic RisingMTG Card: Demonic Rising's trigger and create four 5/5 Demon Tokens at the beginning of the end step, or will it just create one 5/5 Demon Token because another creature came into play?

They will all trigger simultaneously because you control exactly one creature, and then each trigger will resolve. Having one creature is only a condition for the ability to trigger, it's not part of the triggered ability, which simply goes onto the stack as "Put a 5/5 black demon creature with flying onto the battlefield", so all of the triggers will resolve as such and give you demons. You get 4 5/5 demons.

Whenever a spell or ability requires information from the game, that information is determined on resolution. Each Demonic RisingMTG Card: Demonic Rising will trigger. The first to resolve will see that you control a single creature and as a result will put a 5/5 black Demon creature token with flying onto the battlefield under your control.

The second, third, and fourth abilities will see that you control two creatures (your original creature and the new Demon token) and therefore will not create Demon tokens. If you somehow lose a creature before the resolution of the remaining abilities, they will generate tokens when appropriate.

More specifically, abilities with an intervening "if" clause check that clause both when the ability would trigger and when it would resolve. Since you control one creature at the time each ability would trigger, they all trigger. Since you control varying numbers of creatures as they would resolve, only the ones that check and find only one creature will give you a token. You get a single Demon token.

603.4. A triggered ability may read When/Whenever/At [trigger event], if [condition], [effect]. When the trigger event occurs, the ability checks whether the stated condition is true. The ability triggers only if it is; otherwise it does nothing. If the ability triggers, it checks the stated condition again as it resolves. If the condition isnt true at that time, the ability is removed from the stack and does nothing. Note that this mirrors the check for legal targets. This rule is referred to as the intervening if clause rule. (The word if has only its normal English meaning anywhere else in the text of a card; this rule only applies to an if that immediately follows a trigger condition.)

Epochalyptik's response referencing the "intervening if clause" rule is the most correct answer. The condition is checked at the time it would trigger as well as at the time it would resolve.

So depressing... It could have been such a fun and useful card.

Ah, I was not aware that it checked upon triggering and resolving, thank you Epochalyptik.
