Hi folks, I haven't played in years, but am I'm interested in getting back into the game. But- I cant afford MTGA at the moment.
Are there similar software to Magic Workstation in circulation? I know MW was taken down some years ago, which is a bummer, but very understandable as Wizards wants to maximize users and profits for the MTGO.
Does anyone have any leads on something else that's free, or am I stuck with MTGO at this point? Thanks a ton for any feedback!

Nice! most of my playing experience is in-person, to keeping track of triggers shouldn't should a big barrier to entry. Thanks for the info!!

Arena should be playable without paying anything, as long as you don't mind developing more slowly. Paying gets you better stuff faster, but nothing's paywall-locked.
I personally like Cockatrice--I never used Magic Workstation, so I don't know how similar it is, but it has the full card collection, it's active, and I haven't had any serious negative interactions there. Cockatrice doesn't have any automation or anything, which can be an issue if you don't keep track of triggers or whatever, but that's basically the same as casual paper play.
