When it comes to Inkmoth Nexus 's second ability, is that kind of a set defensive only? Basically can it ever attack? (without any "gives haste" buffs etc.) or is it just as defense?

It can only not attack the turn it enters the battlefield. After that is can attack.

Once you play it you can animate it but it has summoning sickness. But the next turn you may swing with it because it has been on the field for a turn. Just because you animate it doesn't make it a creature entering the battlefield. It just changes from a land to a creature.

so when you pay one colorless mana to change it to 1/1 creature that isn't that "Entering the battlefield" so wouldn't it have summoning sickness?

@smash10101: Actually, that's incorrect (the wording was tricky).

When a permanent gains or loses characteristics, it's still the same permanent. Gaining or losing characteristics doesn't cause an object to change zones. Inkmoth Nexus is still on the battlefield, and it will only be afflicted by summoning sickness if you animate it without having continuously controlled it since the beginning of your most recent turn.

Also, rules questions should be asked in the Q&A.
