Hi

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/how-to-turn-modern/

This is my card collection. Can anyone give me any help at all at turning this into a modern deck? I'm just looking to get a qualifying deck for modern so I can get more games under my belt.I have played 9 games of magic in my life so more matches in any format would be fantastic.

@Thrace: my biggest tip for you is to just brew and have fun with your deck. Don't spend a lot of money and just try out synergies that catch your appeal. Also download cockatrice. It is a free version of MTGO but you can make any deck of your liking in order to gain more experience. Learning all the more subtle rules of mtg really helps with your understanding of the game and specifically interactions with cards In modern. I can help you with all that just friend me on cockatrice. My IGN is IzzetFanatic. After that I would start narrowing in on a tier 1-2 deck that you like and want to play and put your own spin on. I can help you with that process as well. You will have to hash out some cash for this as the cards in modern are quite expensive but you will.have them forever. I am an avid mtg player myself and it.is really good to see people like you getting into the format. Gl, IzzetFanatic

I completely agree with IzzetFanatic, just play with a deck that seems fun to you, and slowly refine what kind of deck you want to play. A competitive Modern deck generally costs $400 - $1200, so be sure you know what you like before you invest in one. I'm happy to offer advice on any decklists you have, so feel free to leave a comment on my profile!

Thanks for the kind comments, I've installed cockatrice and added you Izzet fanatic but maybe the time difference may be an issue as I live int he Uk. I've at least managed to figure out what is legal and what isn't, I'm going to turn up to a casual magic event on wednesday with a commander deck and a list to turn it into something that will at least qualify as a modern deck if not a real one. You'd think such a massive hobbie would be easier to get into, its near bloody impossible! save for drafting and sealed events, which are rare, expensive and still way beyond anyone starting out!

My best advice is try to play something aggressive at first. You're not really equipped yet to handle all the subtleties long games of magic will require and so playing a fast simple aggressive deck will be a good way to both help you learn the game as well as get some experience under your belt. Other than that just have fun, brew decks, and go to a lot of drafts

Seeing comments that you made about the deck, my response is the following:
EDH = commanderSo if people are only playing commander, modaern and standard you should be fine with your EDH deck.
And no those cards are no good for creating a modern deck.
1# EDH as a format loves high cmc cards, modern loves low cmc ones.
2# in modern you need 4 ofs of cards, EDH decks don't have that many copies, hence they lose consistency, and then the game - if played by modern rules.

I wouldn't say no good. I saw a Leonin Arbiter in his list. That's definitely a good card in Modern.

MWorl91
A single copy of Leonin Arbiter is not enough.
This EDH deck literally misses all the 59 cards, that tend to be played with cat jesus.
As such, buying the cards to "make this list modern playable", will cost as much as just buying any random deck the guy fancies.
