How Do I Go About Making A Cube? (First Timer)

I'm looking to make the most simplistic cube so I know how to do it in the future rather than rely on the kindness of others (thank you in advance!). How would I go about building my very first cube, and what d I watch for in new sets to replace other cards with?

Hmmm. I get easily confused by cubes too, but there are two general ways of going about this IMO: 1) look up pauper/peasant/casual cubes and see if any theme catches your eye; 2) go through your own bulk cards and throw something together.

I did the latter and it was pretty fun, but a lot of hard work. On the other hand, it puts a use to all that bulk (if you have any; like, old rotated standard cards, plus draft chaff, etc). My friend and I just sat down, pulled out all the cards that looked fun to play with, and then tried to come up with some basic strategies for each color and combo and filled them in. (E.g. UR Delver, BG Elves, BR artifacts, WB enchantments, etc.) It'll probably be fairly unbalanced accidentally, but if you stick to a certain power level of cards overall it's pretty easy to shake out the kinks.

Oh-- here are some guidelines for cube building.

What I had trouble with was balancing rares and colors. Also make sure you don't add any super broken cards because then the one guy at the table who opened the goyf or something else insane doesn't win every match (unless your entire cube is strictly vintage playable cards which would be TERRIBLE).

Start with a theme. I drafted a lot during Khans/FRF so I built a FRF draft cube, only each pack has 2 rares instead if just 1.

Build on your theme whether it be a draft format, or just good stuff. Also, size, how many you intend to have play your cube? 6 player cube is 270 cards, 8 is 360, 10 is 450. Divide that number by 6 (the sixth being multi/colorless), then that's how much of each color to put in for balance. If you have an odd number just toss in an artifact or multicolor, then curve out each color.

Hope it helps some, there are other online resources out there as well for cube building and ideas, like cubetutor, and tolarian college(?) I believe has a video or 2 about it. Have fun!

Pretty easy steps.

  1. Pick a size. I suggest 360 cards as it allows 8 players to draft.

  2. There are 10 bicolor pairs. I'd suggest giving each a theme.

  3. 50 cards of each color, 10 of each bicolor, 10 lands & 50 artifacts/colorless (Scour from Existence or big eldrazi)

Pro tip: remember to include cards that fit into two or more themes. If you've got RG aggro & GU +1/+1 counters, Green Bloodthirst cards are basically autoincludes.

Thank you guys so much! I had no idea on the complexity of making a cube could be so simplified that a schmuck like me could understand the methodologies and methods of Cube creation. Thank you guys so much!!
