Overlord is a new casual format I made with help from some of the people in my playgroup. It can be played with 5 or more people but I'm going to explain it with 7 people. The Overlord sits at the head of the table with the Emperors sitting across from each other directly after the Overlord. The Generals then sit in a row next to their respective Emperor. The teams are divided into the Overlord and two teams of an Emperor and two Generals. The Overlord always goes last. The Emperors also start the game with 30 life while everyone else starts with 20.The Generals have a one on one game going on against the General across from them. Once one General dies it becomes a two on one against the remaining General. Once all the Generals from one side are dead the Emperor and remaining Generals can start attacking the other Emperor. Once one Emperor dies their entire team dies and the remaining team can start going after the Overlord. Each role can target the people directly below them but cannot attack them. The Emperors cannot target each other. If there are any holes you see in this format please say something I can do to fix it or I might have just forgot a rule.
If im understanding this correctly there are 4 Generals, 2 from each team. If one general from team A beats one general from team B, then both generals from team A are against the remaining general from team B? That doesn't sound very balanced, as the team that is behind now gets two opponents. Maybe the remaining general from team B could get a bonus, like draw 5 cards and get +20 life as he is now up against 2?

So basically, this is Emperor with the winning team fighting a player who's had all the time in the world to prepare himself.

smackjack: Thanks, giving the remaining General a bonus seems fair.

What if the overlord plays combo and has infinite amount of squirrels by the time people get to attack him?

I'd much rather just play 3 games of legacy without jumping through all the hoops. Might try this once with commander decks, but in a dedicated format, this seems like it'd be very bad with each overlord running an oloro deck.

Seems like a terribly overcomplicated was to play... ThatJunkMage says it pretty well. Maybe for a tournament, but not only would this take hours, but the Overlord would just be sitting there the entire time. Sounds pretty boring for him...

Yes, maybe the overlord has too make all combat decisions, but cannot know what is in each player's hand?

ive been playing this for 15 years.. and we called it "generals"the group was 5 vs 5 2 "generals" on each side of the main "general" and the "center" general could also pass creatures to his outer teammates... you can only attack the center general when one of the outer generals was killed...games last for hours... almost as bad as commander...

So while the first two generals are playing, what is everybody else doing? Just waiting for that game to end?

That sounds needlessly complicated. Also how are the decks constructed? What are the rules governing those?
