Can you first turn drop an [izzet boilerworks]]? It does not specify to sacrafice it if you don't return a land to your hand like card:Treva's Ruins does, so we thought it was legal. I just wanted to make sure we aren't interpreting this wrong.
It's possible, but there is no point since you have to return Izzet Boilerworks to your hand immediately after you play it.

Since Izzet Boilerworks is the only land you control if you drop it turn 1, you have to bounce it. You cannot play it without returning a land to your hand, unless you control no lands at the time its triggered ability resolves. That means it can return itself, whereas Lair lands specify that they cannot bounce Lairs.

Thanks for the clarification. I now know that if someone plays a first turn boilerworks or other land like it on the first turn, it will bounce itself. We interpret the rules on the fly to majority vote in casual and then look into the real rules after the fact to stay informed and play fairly. I appreciate the quick responses.
