Kind of a weird question, but I feel like there could be some interesting stories/answers. Is there a best way to shuffle a deck? A certain way that you are superstitious about? Share your stories!

For a long time, I was accidently referring to the mash or waterfall shuffle as riffle shuffle. But yeah, mash is the way to go if you don't want to bend your cards. I usually do a cut after each mash to prevent cards at the top or bottom from being unmoved.
I find that mash works very well with cheap everyday sleeves, but the more solid deck protectors I use for events just refuse to weave together. It's like trying to push two bricks into each other, the edges are too thick and always get caught. That ruins the protectors after a few games, really annoying. And none, absolutely none of the videos on youtube have any useful advice that goes beyond "get better deck protectors".

Start the mash at the bottom corners of the sleeves. They're the hardest points and will start the weave without breaking anything. You'll have to apply light force to separate the sleeves if stuck together, but it'll be much easier than doing a full-length mash.
And yes, good sleeves help.

That's kinda the point, I already try to fiddle them in corner-to-corner / corner-to-edge with a not-too-tight grip. There must be something else I'm doing wrong. Ironically, the bottom corners are what actually ends up scratching, bending or splitting.
I am experimenting with different sleeves, next I'll go and try double-sleeved KMC supers to increase overall thickness vs. edge thickness.
