Competitive magic hate

I've noticed a lot of disdain from the magic community against high quality magic decks; often labelled as competitive. I play these decks because I think playing with and against good decks is fun. Why is there so much animosity against this?

I had a thread about this myself a while back. The common consensus was that people like their deck to do what it does without anyone stopping them no matter how unrealistic the goal of that deck is.

I think the big issue is taking a deck designed with a certain kind of game in mind (in this case, a very spike-type tournament) and using it somewhere that other people aren't in that mindset. If one person in a game wants to win using MBD (or w/e) and the other person wants to make an army of squirrel tokens, no one is going to end up having a good time. Neither is intrinsically right, but it's fair to say they don't mix.

People don't like to get beat. I believe that has a lot to do with it. When someone goes into an FNM with a deck they came up with that does really well at home with friends, but does bad at FNM, they don't see why they got beat. They blame it on everything they can which is usually the big decks being played.
I'm a homebrewer so I do get annoyed slightly when I play MUD or MBD for the 5th time in a row in one night, and do feel good when I manage to place at FNM. There have been times I do well and times I get destroyed. I don't get mad and say well that person used a netdeck so that's the only reason they won. Playing against competitive decks helps you get better overall.
You also can find out what works against a certain deck and what doesn't. That's why you adapt and bring in stuff that can handle MUD, MBD, or whatever is big at the time.

People like to bitch. If something don't go their way, they make excuses.
It's not just Magic. It's everything. When I beat people at fighting games, my character is immediately decried as "broken" and/or my strategy as "cheap/low-skill."
What really annoys me about gaming is that so many players refuse to accept their limitations and just want to scream and cry about lag, or messed up controllers, or in the case of magic, OP decks, broken cards, etc.

The only people who hate on competitive decks are casual players who don't like counterspells or spot-removal. The vast majority of online Magic community members are competitive players or, in the very least, build competitively and play outside of tournaments.

@JakeHarlow: Or scrubs on Cockatrice who blame the deck-shuffler.

Am I annoyed when I'm defeated by some MBD player at FNM who Cntrl+C/Cntrl+V'd his entire deck? I guess a little. Maybe I made mistakes. Maybe I had bad luck. Maybe he just played better.
I really only get annoyed when said net-decker is physically and socially repulsive due to basement living (i.e. no deodorant, dirty clothes, nasty fingernails, bad breath, etc.) and then wants to gloat or act like a stud following the win. Like, seriously. If you spent a fraction of the time, money, and effort you put into net-decking on hygiene and personal health, the Tourney scene might distance itself from the unfortunate stereotypes that justifiably characterize them now. I'm an easygoing person but I do take offense at people appearing in public places when they look and smell like dumpsters.

Lol. I don't have a problem with neck beards. Just shower and wear clean clothes. Brush your teeth, use deodorant. Make sure your pants fit. You know, minimum standards.
Be overweight, be neck beardy, be whatever. Just do the above, for God's sake.

See the problem i had was art my last lgs where the tier one deck guys would go out of Thier way to exclude the kids that would show up and even laughed when one of them got hit by a car right outside the shop. I can take competitive I'd idea your age group but c'mon these kids were under 15

@VampireArmy: I mean, nerd bullies exist, definitely. There's douchey players at many LGSs. I don't understand the bully mentality though.
I've played ~14 yr-olds at FNM. Usually I pulverize them because they don't have the money to spend on competitive cards. Older douches like to be jerks to them, and I just don't get it at all. What's to be gained? I tell the kids "good game" and maybe give 'em pointers.
But it really seems that some people turn mean, nasty, and petty when they compete. And they usually direct their vitriol at those they deem weakest. This is the way of bullies, AKA cowards. If I see a dude like that at FNM but didn't get to play him, I always challenge them to a match to put them down in front of the people they were trying to impress.
I love competitive and playing against competitive players. Bullies are the worst though. Their poor manners and juvenile behavior sully the game and overall experience for everyone. I wish all of them would find their way to the door before the start of each tourney.

So from people it bothers: it seems like it's mostly when the pilot is a prick?

JakeHarlow says... #27
Yep. Prick pilots. But honestly it doesn't matter about the deck quality. I just hate pricks who act like tools.
Yeah.

This reminds me of the day i blasphemous acted my own boros reckoner and killed myself before my opponent could because he wouldn't stop trash talking my deck and he tilted so bad he left haha. End of th he say competitive or not, if you aren't in an scg thing or similar try to remember that it's just a card game and a hobby

There's a time and a place for competitive play and a time and place for casual play. The actual reality of the situation is that players don't get better without being forced to play tight. If you don't care about improving, that's fine, but don't be that dude at a Legacy tournament who I have to call a judge on to back up a game state due to unannounced triggers and not waiting to see if things resolve.

@JakeHarlow No one should use deodorant. I think lynx adverts are to blame for the sickly smell wafting off of people nowadays that makes my eyes water and my asthma-ridden lungs clench.
Maybe smelly players are just problems for Americans, most people I've come into contact with at LGS's don't tend to smell like their fresh water got mixed up with the neighbourhood sewage.

Old Spice. There's no way that smell can bother you, lol.
But seriously. I think a lot of neck beards need to take steps to address body odor.

Because when people lose they act like children, get mad and say the decks they run are they only ones viable.
