me and my friend last night was playing a game of magic and he attacked my creature a 4/1 creature and i have a creature that was a 2/5 and he wanted to use cloud shift to blink him in the middle of combat so his creature would still live.

because cloud shift is an instant would this tactic still work in his favor and keep his creature alive.

Yes, but it removes the creature from combat so it wouldn't deal any damage.

Note that Cloudshift can only target creatures its caster controls, so he could only Cloudshift his 4/1. If you blocked, he could Cloudshift the 4/1 before combat damage, but his 4/1 would not get to deal any damage.

Even if you could target other creatures with Cloudshift , the creature is returned to the battlefield during the resolution of Cloudshift . Therefore, he would either blink your creature before blocks (although you would still able to block) or after blocks (although his creature would still be blocked).

Also, questions like this are best asked in the Q&A.
