Tainted Doomsday Shimmer —May 28, 2018

Here's a thought: why do Doomsday and Tainted Shimmer have to be mutually exclusive?

Okay, a Tainted mana base means we can't Gush, which makes Doomsday lines a lot worse. But we can then turn to the oldest budget Doomsday line: Thought Scour + Unearth. Hear me out.

Thought Scour is only marginally worse than Opt. If Opt is maindeckable, I don't think Scour is going to be a significant swap. However, Unearth is, but I still think it's justified. It opens up some sweet lines. EoT can't find Shimmer Myr? You can still set up for a Doomsday win next turn. You can go for EoT Consultation/Pact lines with Quicken + Unearth instead of relying purely on Shimmer. Since we already play Quicken, Unearth seems like the best way to get Labman at instant speed, with the added bonus of enabling efficient Doomsday lines.

Cycling on Unearth was what really sold me though. It's never going to be that bad on it's own, since 2 mana cycling is fair enough. I'll give this version a couple of runs and see how it goes. It's also not a significant change in average CMC - you drop 5 and add 6. A negligible cost to adding what I feel is still a pretty powerful package back into the deck.

Frantic Search is pretty bad without High Tide, even if it's free. Testing Perilous Research as an instant speed draw 2 effect. It has the added benefit of removing Necro at end step so you don't have to exile your hand.

Dropping: Jace, Merchant Scroll, Opt, Frantic Search

Adding: Doomsday, Unearth, Thought Scour, Perilous Research

Ive been using a list similar to this with snow lands and basics to fight non-basic hate. Needless to say, Tainted is a huge improvement, and definitely takes the deck to a whole different level.
