Fire & Dice GPT —April 16, 2017

Took Ugin out of the deck in favor of a fourth Ballista. Kept Ulamog and Sundering Titan on board to see how they'd run. A friend let me borrow his Surgical Extractions, so I had those available in the sideboard.

Round 1: Grixis Delver (0-2)
- Game 1: Chalice on 1 kept him on check for a good amount of time, but once he popped the Kolaghan's Command on it, he dumped his hand full of answers.
- Game 2, I mulled to five and kept a one-lander because of fear of drawing into worse and having nothing at all; ended up becoming victim to a turn 2 Tasigur and got wrecked.

Round 2: Jund (1-2)
- Game 1 was solid, got Tron online and opponent scooped when I dropped Sundering Titan.
- Game 2 was a little less solid on my end, but my opponent played on point.
- Game 3 mulligan'd to five again, went from two hands with no lands to one hand with nothing but lands. I just got into the game way too late game 3.

Round 3: UR Storm (0-2)
- Almost had him game 1; I exiled most of his deck away with the clutch Tron to Ulamog, but he flooded me out with Goblin tokens.
- Game 2 I mulled to five again, keeping a one-lander with a Relic of Progenitus. This was where I made the rookie mistake: I tapped Relic every turn to make him exile a thing from his yard, but I didn't know that the second ability wasn't a tap ability. I watched my opponent storm out because of a misunderstanding on my part. Eh, you learn something new and apply it next time.

Round 4: Calzone (2-1)
- Got the bye, so I went to the pizza place nearby and bought a calzone. It was gone in a flash, but the first bite burned the roof of my mouth.

Round 5: Affinity (1-2)
- WHY IS THIS DECK SO FAST. Game 1 he was on the play and dumped his hand, I died in like three turns.
- Game 2 I had the Chalice on zero on turn 1, hit him with enough Smasher to take the game.
- Game 3 I played Chalice on zero again and I got greedy in Ghost Quartering his two Inkmoths, so I mana screwed myself and died to a modular Cranial Plated third Inkmoth.

Round 6: Bye
- Got the bye a second time. During this time I played one match against an Esper Delver deck. I Chaliced on 2, which I learned was not the optimal play. I kept his ground in check, but I couldn't do anything about the Lingering Soul tokens hitting me in the air. I managed to Ballista away four of the six, but it didn't matter when he swung in for lethal with his Geist of Saint Traft and his 4/4 flying angel.

Observations:
- I need to be more aware of my sideboard cards and what they do exactly.
- Chalice on 1 is pretty great. For today I had 3 Chalice mainboard and 1 in the side, so I think I'm gonna straight up play the set.
- I'm gonna be playing around with either just Karns or just Ulamogs for the next tournament. We'll see if having multiples of either in lieu of the other makes a difference.

Am I satisfied with my performance tonight? Far from it, but it's all a learning experience. I'll get better with each passing tournament.
