Does Breena, the Demagogue +1/+1 counter trigger work on creatures with shoud or protection?

Asked by aj21 2 years ago

Since Breena, the Demagogue rule text does not explicitly say "target" would i be able to choose to put +1/+1 counters on a creature that had shroud or protection from white or black?

For example would i be able to put +1/+1 counters on my Breena, the Demagogue if its was equipped with Lightning Greaves ?

Secondly if i had an Akroma, Angel of Wrath since it has protection from black would that stop me from putting counters on it with Breena, the Demagogue ?

Since it doesn't target you are allowed to choose any creature you control, so it works through shroud and protection.

Magic as a game is very intentional with the word "target": they write it on a card when it's targeting something, and they don't when it isn't. Shroud and Hexproof only work against effects that target.

I did want to add one slight addendum to Omniscience_is_life's post and note there are three times where something targets without the word "target" being used on a card's text.

  1. The first is Aura spells while on the stack--by an operation of rule, when an aura is cast and placed on the stack, it targets.
  2. The next situation involves keyword abilities that target, such as Mutate. In such a situation, the reminder text for the keyword will always contain the word "target"; but that reminder text might not appear on the card itself.
  3. The final example includes some older cards which might not use the word "target" on the physical card, but have received errata (official changes) and now use "target" in the official version of their text (their Oracle text). If you have an older card that uses some weird language, be sure to go to the Gatherer--Magic's official card database--and look at the Rules Text for the card as it appears there. If it does not use "target" on the Gatherer either, then it does not target.

In all other situations, Omniscience_is_life is correct, and if the word "target" does not appear on the card, the card does not target.
