Normally, infect tends to be played as , , or (in legacy). However, I have a long history with the Monoblack archetype. It was one of the first cohesive decks I started to build, going through many iterations ( and to mention a few, but none were any good. There was even a point whenI dismantled basically stopped playing it. Still, my love for the Monoblack Infect archetype would never die and, as such, here I am.

This version tends to be a lot slower than the green ones due to the lack of explosive pump spells like Mutagenic Growth and Scale Up.D Despite this, I tend to have way more fun with control decks, and the Monoblack version delivers exactly what I want.

What's the Goal? Show

Having talked about what the deck wants to do, now it's time to detail exactly how the deck works, card by card.

One thing to note as I'm going into these mentions is they're not definitive analysis about why these cards work or don't work in Modern or any other format (except for Swamp Mosquito). They're just cards I wanted to mention because people have suggested them to me, I used them at some point and/or are common cards people tend to consider when thinking about Monoblack Infect. So, read these with a grain of salt.

Updates Add

Don't know for how long I'll be doing this, but I want to start noting updates to the decklist and potential considerations from time to time.

1x Castle Locthwain - Honestly, probably shouldn't have even put this in. While not bad in itself, it's too slow and mana intensive to draw a single card. Shadowy Backstreet probably replaced it for good.

1x Godless Shrine - With the printing of Shadowy Backstreet, I wanted to cut down on paying my own life. This deck already hates red decks and I don't want to hurt myself and make it worse.

2x Silent Clearing - Basically the middle ground between Castle Locthwain and Shadowy Backstreet. Similar to Godless Shrine, I don't want to keep sacrificing my own life too much. However, the cheap card draw may allow it to come back to the main deck.

4x Mazemind Tome - Even though I cut it and many people said it's not very good, I'm still on the fence about it. It's not proper card draw unless I pay 2 and it doesn't gain life until after 4 turns. However, long-term card selection still seems pretty good, specially with Shadowy Backstreet allowing for more selection.

4x Shadowy Backstreet - Depending on the deck, this can be seen as a bad or good verson of Silent Clearing. It provides card selection, is fetchable and doesn't cost any life. However, it always enters tapped, unlike Godless Shrine and can put the card in graveyard, rather than had, as Silent Clearing does. Will need some playtesting to make sure I'll keep it at 4 copies or maybe cut one or two.

4x Cram Session

Other cards I'm considering are Lavaspur Boots, Lost Jitte, Bloodthorn Flail and, because of all the 1 CMC equipments I've just listed, Urza's Saga
