I started playing Magic: The Gathering during 5th Edition, but did not get deeply into it until the Mirrodin block. After a long hiatus, I came back in 2009 at the end of the Alara block and the beginning of Zendikar, where I introduced a few friends to the game and finally had a playgroup once more. Since then I've been acquiring sets and building my knowledge of Magic from a casual gamer to that of a DCI Level 1 Judge.

Favorite Blocks:

  1. Mirrodin. I started playing in earnest during Mirrodin, and I have always loved that block. Sure, it produced some of the most overpowered cards and mechanics in recent M:tG history, but it was rollicking good fun. I still have a soft spot for artifact decks because of this.

  2. Ravnica Block. I love pairing enemy colors like white and black, and the idea of guilds built around these uneasy alliances is awesome to me. I never got into the tri-color "slices" or "wedges" from Alara because I've always found more than two colors unwieldy, but I think Ravnica added some awesome flavor to Magic.

  3. Zendikar. Tribes, tribes, tribes. Equipment. Landfall. Great for the Timmy in me who runs green ramp like a beast.

  4. Lorwyn/Morningtide-Shadowmoor/Eventide. A binary plane? HELL YES. Hybrid cards? Oh my. Kithkin? Let the Hobbit decks rule them all!

  5. Time Spiral. Timeshifting was meh, but Planar Chaos and Future Sight were friggin' awesome. I love all of the color-shifted cards, some of which hearken back to when Blue had direct damage.
