I've been playing MTG for a while (since Onslaught/Legions block). I love to find weird things to play in all formats, but mainly Commander. I try to make whatever janky ideas I come up with into viable deck ideas.

If you want a deck that will play a different game each time, build one that focuses on alot of synergies rather than combos or power. That way your deck should have alot of different play patterns, rather than trying to tutor up the same pieces every game.

E.g. My Riku of the Infinite ETB Triggers deck used to be a taking turns combo deck. I changed it to focus on value ETB creatures rather than trying to combo (though I do try and win with Biovisionary sometimes, just because it's hilarious). It's alot more fun to play now, though it is less competitive.

Alternatively you can focus on an underpowered theme, like coin-flipping (Heads or Tails), odd converted mana costs (Yennett's Odd CMC Tribal) or cycling (The Infinite Cycle). These decks tend to be a little underpowered, but alot of fun to play.

Said on Return to Dust ......

#2

One thing to keep in mind in favour of Return to Dust is if anyone in your meta runs any of the Theros Gods as commanders. In the cases where you have to remove a Kruphix, God of Horizons or Xenagos, God of Revels I would want Return to Dust over Heliod's Intervention .

But if you don't face any of those commanders (or don't feel the need to remove them very often), then Heliod's Intervention is probably the way to go.

My friend runs a Borborygmos Enraged deck, and he runs it with 60-70 lands (I can't remember the exact number, but its in that range). I think that is a pretty high land count compared to other variations of the deck, but it does work quite well.

He settled on that number because he wanted to be able to "combo" with Borborygmos and Keen Sense / Snake Umbra . With that high of a land count, just getting one of those auras on him is usually enough to kill 2-3 players.

It does mean that he has to run cards like Abundance , Courser of Kruphix , Oracle of Mul Daya , Tireless Tracker and Wheel of Fortune to try and draw into the non-land cards though. There are some games that the deck floods out, so I think it depends on how fast your meta usually is. If your games tend to go into the late turns (8-10), then you could probably accomodate a high land count and sacrifice some consistency. But if your meta tends to be faster, maybe having a land count in the 50-60 range would be better.
