What EXACTLY happens when 2 legends are out on your field at the same time???

Asked by TheGamer 9 years ago

So, one thing i don't understand is what exactly is happening when for example you play a Melira and you already have one out. One has to go. What exactly is the one going away doing? Are you sacrificing it? Is it being destroyed? Im very confused here.

As a followup question, would the legend going to the grave trigger any affects like Grave Pact ?

Thanks in advance!

When you have two or more legendary creatures with the same name, you must put all but one of them into the graveyard as a state-based action. State-based actions are thing the game does automatically, like putting a creature into the graveyard when it has more damage on it than its toughness, or a player losing the game when he has 0 or less life. State-based actions are checked right before a player would receive priority. This means they don't use the stack, and can't be 'responded' to.

When putting a legendary creature into the graveyard as a result of this rule, it isn't being sacrificed. It is of course going to the graveyard so it will trigger gravepact.

Thanks for the response Greatsword ! Question though, is the legend considered dieing?

"Dies" is just Magic-shorthand for "going to the graveyard from the battlefield". Anything that goes to the graveyard from the battlefield "dies".

Note: This is true for all things that go into a graveyard from the battlefield, even if the word "die" makes no logical sense in connection with them (e.g. enchantments, inanimate artifacts, lands, etc.)

Heh, Magic. The place where enchantments can die and lands can be sent to exile...
