What does Braid of Fire do?

I have no idea what Braid of Fire does. Can anyone explain it to me?

Every turn it's in play it increases the amount of mana it generates per age counter on it. The mana is added to your mana pool during your upkeep and at the end of your upkeep (end of that phase) it empties from your pool. So basically you can only use it to play instant spells.

It generates mana on your upekeep. Understanding it requries understanding cumulative upkeeps.

At the beginning of your upkeep, you add an age counter to Braid of Fire, then pay its upkeep cost a number of times equal to the age counters on it. In this case, you'll add R to your mana pool for each age counter. If this mana isn't spent before the next step or phase, you'll lose it.

It was probably more risky before mana burn was removed from the rules. In the older rules, if you ended a phase or step with mana in your mana pool, you lost life equal to amount of mana being "drained" at the end of the phase or step. This doesn't happen anymore, so Braid of Fire no longer has a downside.
