Regeneration

Asked by Adams880 9 years ago

If I want to regenerate a creature for its regenerate cost, do I have to do it in my precombat main phase or can I do it at the end of declare blockers step?

If you have an activated regeneration ability on a creature you need to activate it anytime before it is dealt lethal damage. A regeneration shield last until the cleanup step of each turn. So you could activate it during your main phase 1. Normally you would activate it in the declare blockers step so you don't waste mana if they don't block,

Abilities can be activated at instant speed unless otherwise noted (like on Whip of Erebos ).

How regeneration works is that it puts up a "shield" of sorts that prevents the next instance of the card being destroyed. As long as you activate the ability and let it resolve before the event that destroys your permanent happens, your thing will regenerate.

Thank you guys, however, does anyone have any rulings? I'm 99% sure you are right, but my friends will argue if I don't have hard proof

Here is the comp rules definition of regeneration:

614.8. Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. The word instead doesnt appear on the card but is implicit in the definition of regeneration. Regenerate [permanent] means The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat. Abilities that trigger from damage being dealt still trigger even if the permanent regenerates.
