Kicker and Morph Interactions

Asked by tadium54 8 years ago

Question involving interactions between morph and kicker:

If I cast Root Elemental face down, then pay it's morph cost to flip it up, (say I chose to put a Thicket Elemental from my hand into play), can I just pay the kicker cost on the Thicket Elemental, reveal the top card until I hit a creature and then put that into play too?

The way Thicket Elemental is worded makes me think I can.

Thanks everyone.

Should be in Q&A.

I'm no rules specialist, but my guess is no because you don't actually cast Thicket Elemental. Someone will probably find the precise ruling in a second though.

No, kicker is an additional cost that may be paid when a spell is cast, and since you are putting it on the battlefield rather than casting it you can't pay any additional costs. Note, this is different than "casting without paying its mana cost;" in those situations you may pay additional costs.
