How many 1/1 creatures can Watcher in the Web block?

Asked by DavidLikesPeaches 6 years ago

The text on Watcher in the Web says that it "can block an additional seven creatures each combat", for a total of eight. However, say my opponent attacks me with eight 1/1 creatures. Can I block all eight of them because of the ability, or can I only block five of them because of Watcher's toughness? In other words, does the toughness on Watcher in the Web limit the amount of creatures I can block, or is it irrelevant in that sense?

Toughness plays no role in determining how blocks are made, otherwise, chump blocking wouldn't even be possible. You can block 8 1/1 creatures, Watcher in the Web will die, and 1 or 2 (depending on damage assignment) of the 1/1s will die. You won't take any of the incoming damage.
