how is damage from ninjas and the unblocked creature assigned?

Asked by student-of-life 9 years ago

If I have a Nekrataal on the battlefield and I attack, and he is unblocked and then I pay mana, and put out a ninja, do both the Nekrataal and the ninja do damage, or just one of the creatures?

Creatures in deal damage in the Combat Damage step of combat. Only creatures in combat can deal damage at this time; the Nekrataal will be in your hand at that point and won't be able to deal any damage.

Sorry typo; that first line shouldn't have that "in" in the sentence.

Even if it has first strike? That would normally hit before Tue regular attack. I think that's what he was saying. I just want to make sure. Thanks again!

I see what you mean. Yes, you may activate Ninjitsu after the first strike damage step, but before the regular combat damage step. The Ninjitsu'd creature would then be around for the regular combat damage step and deal his damage as well.

As a rule, the game never moves onto the next step or phase of the turn until all players pass priority consecutively over an empty stack.
