how does the regenerating Rhys the Exiled work in a commander deck?

Asked by student-of-life 9 years ago

If Rhys the Exiled is killed, I pay the one black and sacrifice an elf and he comes back to the battlefield? I wasn't sure how it worked. I haven't used a lot of sacrificing and wasn't sure of how it worked with a commander and the graveyard.

I believe that you have a misunderstanding about how regeneration works.

When you regenerate a creature it means that until the end of the turn if the creature would die it instead doesn't die and becomes tapped and removed from combat. You cannot activate Rhys the Exiled 's regeneration from the graveyard and even if you could it would not do anything as he is already dead.

Oh, okay. So, if someone uses a Lightning Bolt on him, I pay the one black, sacrifice an elf. Then tap him and remove him from combat until the end of turn. Then, I untap him when I untap my creatures and lands on my next turn?

You are correct. However if he is regenerated during the first main phase and is then untapped he can attack that turn.
