How does Sudden Spoiling Work?

Asked by Kevinbbdelaney 9 years ago

Say i have a creature that is a base 1/1, but was giving 10 +1/+1 counters earlier in the game. Sudden Spoiling is played, now is my creature a base 0/2 still with the 10 counters making it a 10/12, or just a 0/2?

The creature would be a 10/12 because of layers.

Everything relevant to your question is in layer 7, where "Power- and/or toughness-changing effects are applied."

Sudden Spoiling's power/toughness setting effect is applied in layer 7b (Effects that set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value are applied. Effects that refer to the base power and/or toughness of a creature apply in this layer.).

Later, the bonus from the +1/+1 counters is applied in layer 7d (Power and/or toughness changes from counters are applied.).

The end result is a 10/12 creature (with no abilities thanks to Sudden Spoiling.).

Even though the +1/+1 counters were applied to the creature a few turns earlier? I was unsure if the counters became part of the creature, therefore would not add on after the Sudden Spoiling.

The counters are on the creature and therefore give a bonus. It doesn't matter when they were placed, because, as stated above, their buff is applied after Sudden Spoiling sets its power and toughness.
