Can someone explain to me what Deflecting Palm does exactly?

I was dueling my best friend and he tossed Deflecting Palm down during combat phase while I attacked with 12 3/1 goblins and said I take 36 damage instead of him. Does it really work like that? The card states, "The next time a SOURCE of your choice would deal damage to you this turn, prevent that damage. If damage is prevented this way, Deflecting Palm deals that much damage to that SOURCE'S controller.

Linking your cards might help.

Deflecting Palm

Each creature (3/1 goblin) counts as one source. The easiest way to explain a source would probably be ...... a card? It could be an instant/sorcery on the stack, permanent, pretty much anything. If they named a goblin with Deflecting Palm , that one goblin's combat damage would be prevented and you'd be dealt 3 damage in it's place.

@Seraphicate The word you are looking for is object. An object is anything that exists in the game and something becomes an new object every time it changes zones. Cards, Tokens, permanents, and copies of spells on the stack are all objects which can be sources. Additionally I believe there is an old card where a player is the source (an unusual redirection effect) but it may have been errataed.
