Blood artist + lifelink triggers

Asked by Ekkus 11 years ago

I was at 1 life any my opponent had a blood artist and some lingering souls tokens in play. I attack with my drogskol reaver and he blocks with a token. Who gets to stack the triggers first? Would blood artist resolve first and kill me or would I be ok with my lifelink? Also would it be different if I was blocking and he attacked with 1 token and I block with the reaver.

Lifelink will change your life total immediately after combat, before Blood Artist's ability checks that a creature has died and gives it's controller the choice of which player to target to lose life.

If your opponent also has something that triggers during your -insert phase, step here-, it goes on the stack after yours do, since you're the active player at the time. Also worth nothing that your opponent's abilities will resolve first, since they were placed on the stack last.

lifelink happens simultaneously with damage being dealt, Then state based actions will be checked and the game will recognize the creature was dealt lethal damage and it'll be sent to the graveyard, and it's at that time Blood Artist 's ability will trigger and go on the stack. Though all these things may appear that they're happening all at the same time when in the middle of the game, that is more to keep the pace of the game moving. In reality things happen step by step.

Lifelink, as of current rules (it wasn't always this way) gains you life as a side effect of the damage being dealt. You gain life at the same time the damage is dealt. Any triggers, such the one Blood Artist has, that trigger off the results of the damage, will go on the stack only after the damage has been dealt and you have gained the life.

This is a change from the original version of lifelink, which was a triggered ability. In the old version, you would have lost because the Blood Artist trigger would have resolved first. In the current version, you gain the life before the trigger even goes on the stack.

TL;DR: You gain the life before the Blood Artist triggers.
